4 letters for 'almost' (minus 'a') around Scots for 'tiny' (giving an extra letter) def 'stranger' (loosely).

My earlier reference to a diagonal connection relates to the previous direction of travel which is cut off by the alteration (but still possible moving diagonally).

drxx, I think I see your point. However, I still find that result unsatisfactory, because it is asking the new letter to do more work than it does elsewhere in the grid. If the other entries were real words, but for the new letter, then I would be more comfortable. Is it clear that both the letter and its inherent properties will need to change, under any circumstances?

I'm afraid I'm lost. I don't see the significance of the connection to the letter above it. So we think the letter required by the C corrections is the correct one?

I agree with you, riversk, and it's not a solution I like. But as a putative solver I can only wait for someone to give a little hint regarding the elegant solution I'm unable to grasp (until then, it's a gwit for me - and an unpleasant one at that).

This thread is always useful in another respect. If all of you are struggling I might just as well label it as too difficult and get back to the Olympics! I managed half a dozen cold solves.

I found the sentence in the preamble re king and queen to be an unnecessary addition.

I changed one cell, making two new words, and changed the cell to a letter associated with all of the C-type clues.

Having 8 now, as opposed to 7, presents a solution according to the maths (even numbers needed). I’m assuming that previously the actual 7 items are all either horizontal or vertical. By adding an 8th item in the specific location, one gets a diagonal item too, thus allowing only those two chess pieces to move around the problem…

Does that mean that we should show the river as well?

Cockie, I believe the D-type clues tell us to do so, in a roundabout way

Thanks - that makes sense to me and is at least a plausible explanation of the entire preamble. That will do for me anyway, not going to waste any more time on it.

I am completely mystified as what to do and totally admire those who have completed this. I have changed a single letter in row "X", column "Y". The new letters alphabetical position is "Z" and

(X*Y*Z) / (X+Y+Z) = 4.125

and the instances of the new letter in the grid = (X+Y+Z)/2

I hope that doesn't give too much away!!!

BUT, I have no idea what the picture that needs to be shown is, nor the term associated with B. I'm also not too sure what the instruction from D actually means!!

C'est la vie.
