Fwiw, apart from the confusion over the very last step, I thought this was pretty good and not that hard.

The gridfill is medium difficulty in my view - no clashes or multiple letters or adjusting entries to worry about, and the end result is quite pleasing. Worth persevering in my view.

Gitto - if you Google A and 15 it’ll become clear.

For those wavering re: the final step - it depends on how rigidly you adhere to the definition of the first word of D.

If you decide that W, say, is equivalent, thematically, to F. say, you’ll get a different picture than if you decide that it isn’t.

Trust this is neither too, nor inadequately, cryptic, bizarrely.

hw7, I did that yesterday and spent a whole lot of time reading about subjects I simply do not understand. My thematic letters, prior to the adjustment of the final one, seem to be in more or less the precise positions that they should be. So the letter I have changed is clearly included in the picture that I need to draw - but I don't think I can be bothered 'cos I don't know what it looks like, what the term from B is nor how to decide the equivalencies.

If it's any comfort, I'm exactly where you are, Gitto. I also spent a lot of time yesterday reading something that made no sense to me at all (and in a subject I previously thought I was quite good at). The picture and the royal reference still baffle me.

Hello
Perhaps it's about the chess moves for the King and the Queen?

Sounds like I'm in the minority but I enjoyed this one immensely. I liked that some of the clues didn't give up their secrets too easily, meaning that they all needed to be solved thoroughly, understanding the word play. I think that the end game is entirely unambiguous and very clever. I'll go and hide now!

Unambiguously me, too, on the basis that it was the only solution that made sense.
I have drawn no lines and coloured no rivers.

RHSL - I think you have to have done (draw a river) to have completed the puzzle…

I think I may have just had a massive PDM. I have a full grid in which I have used three colours and no lines. Is that what others have - it seems to satisfy all elements of the puzzle - that is if the use of "picture" is meant to be deliberately unhelpful.
