I can't see 12a at all! Help!!

Yes, jono - when I first counted I got only 14, but then realised that Soup had doubled up in two clues. Very clever indeed. Not to mention the references to elements of them (pugil sticks, climbing nets for two).
I haven’t spotted the original cast member you refer to, but didn’t really watch it first time round.
I guess references to the hosts and the ref would have been too much of stretch (or maybe I just haven’t found them yet…!)

samuipete - I needed most of the crossers, for 12, and the it could be only one thing. It’s an insertion of 4 initial letters in the name of a cartoon dog I had never heard of.

Rog’, Shadow is from the 90s I believe, just going by Wikipedia.

Do you have the answer, samuipete? If you do, a Google should bring up the cartoon dog. I mean, me neither, but if I had children I would probably be all too familiar with it.

Somehow I managed to finish this, with no real idea of exactly what the theme was :) ... but I have spent a long time on it! In the end I quite enjoyed it, even if I found some clues almost impossible to parse!
Some much easier, but I found myself massively overthinking some of the easier ones, assuming they were elaborate wordplays too!

I also had no idea how to parse 12a - I just put the obvious answer in based on crossers and the first word being the definition.

whoops, I meant 17a, not 12a!!
