yes indeed. i just thought the clue was broad enough for other answers to be possible, especially before crossers went in. there have been lots of kings!

That wasn’t in fact my issue with 13dn. I can’t think of any other kings who share a 4 letter name with the surname of a writer in question! And this brings up the age-old question whether you should be able to solve all the clues in a crossword without having any of the crossers. In my view not, because that’s part of what a crossword is all about! But other views are of course available…. 😉
