For what little it's worth Malone, I thought it was a good and witty hint:-)

Thanks Malone,

Alas, I haven't got around to the IQ yet, my brother-in-law has just sent me the completed draft of his doctoral thesis for proofing and editing and was hoping I could get it returned to him by the end of the week - it's 265 pages! 🫣

Judging by the comments on here though it seems like a difficult one and I've been a bit off my game lately 😥

Can I check my understanding about multiple letters. I read these as arising from the intercepts between rows and columns but not from the overlap of consecutive entries. This assumption is causing me some grief. For example, I think I have the first and third clues in 12d but they don't marry up and I'll be damned if I can work out how I get a virus somewhere I the middle. I realise there may be letter changes from across clues. Maybe I haven't got far enough to see where this is going. Any clarification greatly appreciated.

Whistler, the virus slots in very nicely, neatly straddling the other two. Fitting in the first answer was the trickiest part of me.

Thanks, Malone. I thought I had a pretty solid answer to 12d (i) but based on what you are saying, I think I must be barking up the wrong tree. Although I originally thought I was looking for a tree and then decided that I should be singing from a different song sheet. In short, I'm running out of mixed metaphors. Unless I should be looking for a fish - crimson; cold water; often soused. Anyway. Back to the drawing board.

Thanks, Whistler. I'm not sure if my earlier hint ('hint'?) could help you - it's about half a dozen posts up...
