buddy, that is what I particularly don't like about this end game - it has more ambiguities than certainties, According to the BRB the N must become R, which gives me a bigger problem as I have D=S in 21a and T=N in 14a. Are either correct?

14 is correct but not 21. Swap is in 3rd word.

I have spent many hours on this. I have the play, the shape, all the quotes apart from the one by the 11 lettered writer. I know what the next word is. I have searched ODQ and the internet and I believe I have tried out all possibilities.. Maybe I have made a mistake somewhere but everything else works out. I really would appreciate a hint as to how to locate it

nanu- if you have everything else, you should pretty much be able to draw in the last shape as there is arguably only one place where it will fit.

Having got home again and having access to my ODQ I finally got there but would never have done within it.

Still can't worked out the 'aquarellist in a disco' part of 30a. Nothing looks much like a disco, more like a brawl perhaps!

PS I went completely up a gum tree trying to find letters to swap in the clues with extra words in.

That 'other' in the preamble is doing a fair bit of heavy lifting in logic terms.

G1 - there’s a very crosswordy two letter abbreviation for artist.

There’s a similar one - R(X, TBA) - for watercolorist, somewhat surprisingly, but validly if infrequently used.

‘But’ - in this context - means ‘except’ (for the first letter of…) - with ‘A’ generating the eight-letter.
