Thanks HW7. I got sidetracked by thinking 'but first' = 'b' and I couldn't stop seeing a jumble of a painter/sculptor.

Never seen that abbreviation used in that way either!

Hurrah! Finished. ๐Ÿ‘ (I don't submit them but I'm happy with the logic regarding shading).

I've now burnt my towel thrown on the floor, such that I can't pick it up again, as I am completely baffled as to what to do. I can't even see, horizontally, vertically, circular, square or in blocks anything that actually forms words - other than the down answers of course.

After a long struggle, I am finally at the end game. From the across clues, I have the following letter changes:-

23: G for C
18: not applicable
17: U for O
12: S for I
30: E for L
32: not applicable
33: don't know
31: E for C
19: U for A
22: not applicable
21: S for A
14: don't know
1: E for T
11: not applicable
13: Z for R
27: + for &

I trust that the foregoing is not too specific for this site, in which case would somebody be kind enough to confirm whether any or all of these are correct and perhaps add the letters for 33 and 14 for me.

Gitto, you know the cell count of each shape is 20. Each has four lines of four and four connectors. Start drawing a line south from the Q. Thereโ€™s an equivalent symmetrical line on the right

Gitto, 18a and the jumbling thereof has been mentioned. This results in the resolution of a quandary regarding the 1st and last letters. Give the last one a hard stare and go south (ignore the letter above it and don't look for that to make something with corners on....like I did).

0pt0, at first glance your 23 needs bringing forward one letter and the key to 19 has been discussed earlier. I thought this one was particularly tough...it's currency related.

...and 0pt0, one of the words used in 14a is, I would say, a little unusual in Listener crosswords although it might indicate oo or OO...possibly. ๐Ÿ˜‰

I've finished. Phew. That was a workout and I would still be staring at the long across clues without help from the forum, thank you!

How many cells are we shading in? 2? 6? or are we getting the compasses out? (it does say exact!)
