I am on my umpteenth restart, mainly because of the asterisked clues. When it says the encoded answer is entered in reverse, does it mean the full encoded answer or each letter of the encoded answer?

Full encoded answer. 12 letters, all in reverse.

I had to restart three times. Just be meticulous and keep careful track of your letters. With code variations, the grid doesn’t give you a ton of feedback (and a couple of the clues are particularly tricky). The fill is challenging even once you know all the answers - it’s easy to make mistakes if your logic is not solid. However, I encourage you to persevere; it’s among the top 4-5 puzzles I’ve ever done. Final step is incredible.

Are the last two words the definition? I assume the bridge opponents are one of the 4 obvious pairs but I am struggling to see the word that means Angry.

The preamble gives the example 'CTG encodes t', not 'encodes TO t'. So, the other way round. But see also the 3rd sentence of the preamble.

While I'm here, I just can't see the extra letter in t (assuming I have the correct answer which I'm pretty sure I do, given the preceding and succeeding answers.
