This use of cat keeps on coming up. (Only 7 clues still to unravel, BTW.)

I think its an abbrev for a particular type of school - 6 letters in 2 words for happen, remove one letter

Not sure is this the most difficult puzzle in years (a week after the easiest!) but it must be the most difficult preamble. Before I give up completely and go and clean my flippers on a very wet sandbank could someone please explain: how, using the grid, does CGT encode t? If I could at least get that far it may be worth persevering. Thanks all

I'm about halfway through solving the clues with a few tentative entries in the grid. My understanding of 'CTG encodes t' is that, if the 4 letter solution contains a t, then you enter CTG in the grid at that point. Seems to be working based on what little I've done so far.

Hi william seal

CGT doesn't encode t, as, in the given grid, first letter C, second letter G and third letter T gives a black square, so that combination CGT doesn't encode anything.

I'm going mad with j - I think I know the fort later, but nothing then makes sense

Erk! Just realised that there's something slightly misleading in what I've just replied but I won't say any more in case I stray into 'spoiler-land'. But it was sort of correct.
