Bobby, the archive on The Times page only seems to go back to 2017 —-how did you go further back?

Cancel that Bobby - finally followed some instructions on the site I had overlooked. :)

Am giving it a go. Can I just confirm one thing: does the 0v mean that the letter v does not appear in any of the 4 word answers? Thanks

Incredible. Worth the effort, which for me was brutal. A stunning achievement.

Yes, any letter marked by 0 (h, j, q, v) is unused (and since 6 letters are not encoded, x and z are also unused.

That's not going to be much help!

I have all but one clue cold-solved and maybe 25% of the grid filled. This is quite a challenge...likely the hardest Listener in several years.

Ooh, I don’t think I’ll bother. Oftentimes the preamble looks daunting but once you get into it it’s doable. Judging by all you proper crossword people this isn’t one for me.

A numerical next week or the week after, isn’t it? I’m sharpening my pencil and putting new batteries in my calculator in anticipation:)

I've done 17 clues, discovered one definite new coding, but now stuck. Tips for b, h* and e* would be useful, thanks.

Do I need to worry about further instructions before the end?

dylan - e* - defn is first two words (look past normal defn of cat) - let me know if you need more

b and h* are defeating me atm - along with j.

I am also struggling with the coding aspects (getting contradictions) - time for a new printout i think!

Thanks Andyp, I'm on my second printout, plus todays paper!

I'm afraid your directions were not enough for this brain - I hadn't realised that, even under the first listing, there are so many meanings of cat. Is it one of those, or the later ones?
