Theragman, I think it's fair enough. The Chambers entry supports it, and the endgame instruction is absolutely clear. It was by far the easiest part of the puzzle.

I'm very glad I did not look at this site until I'd finished the puzzle. The comment at #42 would have thrown me completely as far as the final part of the endgame is concerned.

A very tough puzzle. I think I must have spent three hours solving the last six or seven clues.

Well that was a slog and no mistake! Do-able but a challenge at almost every stage.

drxx, thanks for that. I wondered about the Spectator. I also remembered vaguely that one of the characters in the thematic work played a prominent part in the puzzle.

Hi Murky, I looked with interest at #42 and found it was my post! Not sure which bit was confusing but I should probably have said 'the down clue letters started to look like a phrase I know, which directed me to the theme and therefore the key to the multi-letter squares. Then, by process of elimination, I knew what I was looking for for the final element which must be part of 1a'.

Solving the parsing of a couple of across clues, or identifying the misprints in them, again was helped by process of elimination, thanks to the 'Books recur....' part of the preamble.

I may have been a little opaque as a result of not wanting to give anything away regarding the theme.

Only halfway through but confident the light at the end of the tunnel won't belong to South Western Railway - based on the success of other posters.

It's daunting but get-at-able. Onwards and sidewards!

I have a general question about the forum - apologies if this is better asked elsewhere, please feel free to redirect me.
Using the site on my iPhone as soon as I login the thread gets reversed, such that the “next” or “last” links take me backwards and the “previous” or “first” links take me forwards. Anyone else get this? If so is there a fix? It’s not a big deal, just a bit odd.

It’s a setting you can alter. If you are logged in, click the edit button next to your username, I.e Welcome Pootle (edit). At the bottom of the page you see you can edit Forum settings to show posts as oldest or newest first
