Think the omitted words relate, six each, to two words in the title of the work. I got halfway to the theme from one of the group of words.

29a does yield the 9th item, it's adverb 'stuffily' relating to 'proper' or affected behaviour with anagram of 'air' inserted.

Thanks Murana. I had become fixated on trying to accommodate the additional letters at the beginning of the entry. When this did not work I should have tried the other end! Thanks again.

ukridge (if you're still following the thread) I finally tracked down the previous puzzle but I can't be too specific while this one's still fresh. It was in the Spectator series this year - fairly early on.

Did anyone else start by putting in what seems a very obvious answer to 42d, before finding much later it was completely wrong?

The only thing I can’t quite sort is which of the surplus words can go with both elements of the theme?

Not totally convinced but I have the surplus word from 24a as relating to both elements. They are both referenced in Chambers.

I thik it's the extra word in 26.
