Have you tried a search on xwdb.info?

It may have been an IQ. My memory's not as sharp as it was. Though I just checked and I'm back as far as 2014 in my trawl through the Listener archives, so it could have been an older one.

If I could briefly interrupt this trip down Memory Lane, can I check that the answers where multiple letters occur in a cell may have more than one such cell in them?
Also, being specific, I have an idea for 13ac, but can't see the word play - tips please

I did, drxx. I certainly thought this puzzle tested the bounds of fairness with the lack of help available from crossers in some clues, particularly if you had no help from the theme. But it’s been a long week; I was probably just being slow

I have manged to solve, and parse, every clue other than 1ac. To give me a fighting chance of finishing this, how many letters of the answer go in the first cell?

Thanks Quisling, I think "borderline unfair" is being rather generous - now to figure out how to finish this.

I have now completely finished this, other than sorting out the two thematic sets of six - which is irrelevant to a degree. …….Sentence removed by Admin ……….

Ten minutes on google/wiki confirmed everything for me - for me, an unknown, and VERY obscure, theme. This proved to be a nice challenge, and my rather fortunate act of serendipity saved a very, very long grid stare - and to be fair, without wiki I would never have finished this.
