33a the missing letter is in a short word, slug is a violent one possibly with a wearable implement, source of lichen is what you'd expect it to be. The result is not something I'd heard of but is in Chambers.

In 44d I am unable to find any connection between the nobleman and the answer plus hesitation. Is it in Chambers?

Just dropping in to add my heartfelt congratulations to Check. A magnificent puzzle and the most fun I’ve had with the Listener in ages!

Looking for some parsing help, now that some time has passed since Friday…. if you’d be so kind.

21 across: Just generally, does “ae” somehow = “aged” ? I came across this in another puzzle last week and can’t find that use in Chambers

32 across: I assume the missing letter is the very first in the clue. But I can’t break down the wordplay.

40 across : Where does “baby” fit into the answer – is it part of the wordplay or part of the definition?

42 across: The last word of the clue, “soul,” seems to be extraneous —how does it fit in the parsing?

21 - definitely in Chambers but followed by a full stop.

32a - Yes, first word once letter is added gives the first letter and the last 4 are a dialect/in the countryside word for "woven baskets" once reversed/twisted.

40a - I think "baby" forms part of the definition.

42a - "ancient soul" is last 2 letters of the answer.

BM, ignore my 42a.
