DSC, EV was to be axed, then it got a reprieve. There's an earlier thread - Save Enigmatic Variations (that should come up in the search box).

I have completely filled the grid apart from parsing 12d. I know it contributes to a ‘symbol’ and have the crossing answer, but even after sleeping on it it hasn’t materialised in my brain! Any guidance? Thanks in advance.

Diver, the clue answer is a Scottish legal term. There's a common 'slip' and the 'largely voided', common crossword device, leads to the last two letters.

Tremendous, as is expected from Dysart. Very fine piece of grid construction IMV to get the clashes symmetrical, spelling the relevant items and all capable of being replaced by the common symbol (although only three are asked to be). Top notch.

Thanks, malone. Neither a legal term I was familiar with or indeed that symbol, but thankfully all is complete now.

Nearly there, help over the line please!

Have 5 out of 6 clashes, know where the final one is and how to resolve it. Cannot parse the clashing clues though! It’s the lower middle one. Don’t want to give its location away, but appreciate it may be hard to help without doing so…

Thanks

As you say, adeano, it's a bit difficult to give a nudge without revealing too much but I'll try.

For the down element the solution is the same length as the grid entry, so only one letter is part of the clash.

In the across clue, the def. is the first 2 words - a pretty obscure archaism, I thought. The remaining words of the clue, taken in sequence, each provide a discrete element of the solution.

I hope this is not too opaque.

I’ve completed everything but I’m still bemused by the quotation. If I Google it nothing comes up so I don’t know where the quotation comes from. I also don’t see how it explains the three different symbols. Can anyone help to enlighten me please?

Pootle, are you sure of the words you have for the quotation? I've put the first few in and the actual quote came up - leading to the explanation for the symbols.
