I really liked this one.

Nice to have a single-session Listener for once; enough thematic material that the derived quotation helped with the clueing, the author helped with the theme, and that the device - once identified - helped disambiguate the answers to certain clues.

Fermat did have *other* theorems than his last; not all Listeners have to be an easy gridfill: incredibly frustrating endgame - and the title was a nice touch.

Many thanks Dysart!

Grrr! All complete apart from 20a and 6d.

dsc - in your earlier hint for 20a, what did "(int.)" mean after the word "stop"? Thanks in advance.

After the business of getting the contents of the house into storage (before looking for somewhere to downsize to) and moving what we need meantime into the flat, it was pleasant to sit down with a cuppa and a challenging but do-able distraction. Thoroughly entertaining and very well constructed; every piece (including the title) falling neatly into place. Thank you, Dysart!

Found this tough, since there seemed to be a lot going on, but I plunged on and finished it. However, I am not sure about the wordplay for 14a and 2d, so will take a rest before looking at these again tomorrow.

Foinhaven - 14a, picked up = heard, 2d up = anagram

Ignore the 2d hint, I looked at the wrong clue! I too haven't a clue how to parse 2d, I can see all the necessary letters in the clue but don't understand how they are indicated.

2d. is a composite anagram. An anagram of 2 words in the clue is an anagram of the regular letters in 'needing' + the answer.

Thanks for that. I should have spotted how 'needing' was to be used. I suppose this 'and lit' .

Still not sure about about 14a, though there is surely only one thing it could be.
