OOPS! Re 33d
I put "..although one would be a def.for the last 3 letters in the entry, along with the 'simple abbreviation' as the first."
No it wouldn't! - I was confusing it with the uncorrected first word- which could however still work as a def for the last 3 letters if the misprint is elswhere.
The correct corrected first word, if my penultimate message letter is correct, as it surely must be, doesn't lead to any definition of the answer that I can find.

I've just got back from a trip around the wild heights of the Peak District, quixote - thanks for the very generous apology (not at all necessary, by the way).
Im not sure I can add much more to the hints for 'pink' and 33d without giving too much away but I'll give that some thought. For now, though, here's a hint for 'Capo...' -
the first word changes to give a single letter abbrev. 'ended' is a synonym for the next two letters, the next word is another single letter abbrev. followed by a synonym for 'said' (4 letters).

...for 33 I'm sure you've got the correction for the first word right - the definition part that fits the entry is the final (vt) part of the first entry for that word in Chambers (for the answer it's the second part of the first entry for that word in Chambers).

...your entry for 38 is defined by the first word of its clue (after correction) if you were to change its first letter for one 4 places higher alphabetically you'd have a 3 letter word that is a synonym for 'pink'.

...sorry, I now see you have a problem with my shortened, 'stop!' (2 letters) I thought this might be a better steer to the word you needed but the correct definition of this 2 letter word is towards the end of its definition in Chambers (it's 'stopping' for 'cessation', not 'stop!').

Just filling in the grid for this puzzle to submit a double entry with 4727.

I can't find a response to my query way back in #35: "...the two instructions seem to be in the wrong order — unless the second is indicated with an arrow?".

Is the arrow the solution to the second instruction?

I did them in reverse order as that seemed to make more sense.

Am sure anything that shows you understand it fully will be marked
correct.

Thanks for quick response, cd.

I've seen an arrow used on one website I consulted, so I think I'll follow suit (he said, in an attempt to bamboozle those still struggling with the theme!)

Went back and finished this one. Not an expert in the field by any means so certainly wasn't in drxx's position,

One loose end for me - like others - I don't understand 37a, despite the hint from malone. I'm assuming the letter to be changed in the last letter of the fourth last word, but Punjab is a 's' isn't it? Is there another name for it?

Thanks
