Others have mentioned 4d. I have completed the whole puzzle and have a word that fits 4d and a modified 11a, but don’t understand the wordplay for 4d before it’s modification. Any help please? Many thanks

diver, check the def of rabble as a transitive verb in Chambers, then remove a word meaning fall, reversed.

Sorry, to be precise you have to find a synonym of the Chambers def of rabble before removing the 3 letters.

diver - 4d. wp is word for rabble (the verb not the more common noun def) removing a reversed word for fall off (or fall away) gives a word for conflict (verb).

Made good progress through most of the grid in one day, but now I've been stuck for the whole week. Everything is filled but for a few NW answers—11ac, 16ac, 2d, and the dreaded 4d—plus the one unchecked cell in 30d. I just have no idea how to proceed, as I've been unable to determine any details about the theme.

Anyone have any nudges to help me onto the right path?

This was a bit trickier this week but very enjoyable and an extremely clever construction. Chapeau to Elfman!

There is I think a minor ambiguity when it comes to the highlighting. I have plumped for the option that gives the best symmetry but would be interested to hear whether there are any dissenting views on this forum.

Yes there are two possible options for the last letter but I would go for symmetry. While an asymmetric thematic shape may be possible in nature it would not meet EU standards.
