Greetings from an an occasional poster and solver. Am late starting this and, judging from the previous comments, will be struggling manfully.

Is the name of the alphabetically second songwriter the one that has been treated?

The first 2 letters of metal man’s name should give it away.

Grinding to a halt on this, would appreciate further help on 1a, not seeing the space explorer part.
Also 24d - is this thematic?

Hi Lumen, 24d is not thematic but is not a 'western' event.

The part of a space explorer isn't something I'd ever heard of but it's there in the BRB. Only 3 letters and more usually associated with a v common form of transport rather than space. First word is the def.

lumen - 1a) withdrawn indicates its a reversal, defn is first word. I havent actually worked out space explorer either - so let me know if you need more.

24d is not thematic - pre noon is standard 2 letter abbreviation, followed by a reversal of activity.
