Thanks, ukridge (post #25) Got it! I spent way too much time trying to find it from the second definition of "rabble" in the BRB. Two blind alleys in one puzzle!

Apologies. I inadvertantly identified one of the thematic clues. Mea Culpa.

Sadly I found this one too difficult and am hopelessly stuck. Are any other regular contributors to this forum in the same position?
What I find is that if I can cold solve half a dozen clues I stand a fair chance of completing, most often with the help from this forum. I therefore welcome easier clues and a challenging endgame. Since I've had a good run it was perhaps time for tough one. I'll have another look at the thread later in the week. Thanks anyway.

Struggling with understanding the rubric and solving the NW quadrant. I have three answers which dont relate to the entire clues, 8 ,10 and 30 down and can see a word elsewhere which defines 10 bit otherwise I am stuck. Maybe someone could help elucidate the preamble for me a little.
Does the "real" answer to 1 across start with the first letter of I down?
Hope this is not too explicit. All nudges appreciated

Wiliamseal, I’m similarly challenged this week. I have filled about half the grid but I haven’t got anywhere with the thematics. Will take a break to see if that helps.

Thanks Ukridge- I haven't previously met the idea that the digit in the brackets, for entry length, and any other info eg two words, might refer to different things!

Still struggling to see the theme, based on my one success, at 8dn

I should have perhaps added that I have an across answer ( in the lower half of the grid) which seems to have a definition but nonsense wordplay and only a 1 word answer and not 2 as indicated

Mullingar, neither 1ac nor 1d is thematic, so yes

Sorry I didn't notice your other post mullingar. That across clue is thematic (second set).

dylan - you will need more than one of the 8d type to get that part of the theme. as for thr other part, i pretty much had a full grid before it clicked - so dont give up (and shout if you need a nudge)!
