Once again grid staring is infuriating me. I have both sets of four and definitions for all eight, 4 as redundant words, 4 integral to other clues. I have no idea as to the song title so finding the composers is rather difficult. I think I'm looking for 11 letters in total - but I may be wrong.

Gitto, I think you are better off studying the thematic clues and their answers to get a hint to the song title than looking for the songwriters in the grid. I’d be surprised if anyone finds the songwriters before the song

Gitto, the redundant word Common to the 4 in the set plus the 2 words from the other set should point you towards the song title.
Not sure how old you are, but those of us of a certain vintage would be well aware of it.
I had to Google the composers.

The 2 words from the other set being in 4 different languages?

Got it now!! - and another language involved. The mirrored shape is reminiscent of a famous album cover - although that is irrelevant.

I thought this was a very clever puzzle. I like that the 'other' name of one of the answers in the second thematic set features in a clue, though that sent me up a blind alley for a while, wondering if one of their songs was the key.

i have battled my way through to a full grid - but am now thwarted. I have two of the first set (so entry and answer), but there seems to be no consistency to the treatment.

I also know the other two entries (by virtue of the second set extra words) for the first set (but not the answers), and all details of the second set.

Equally there seems to be no connection between the treatment of second set and first set.

any hints gratefully received!

I went a long way down the same blind alley, ukridge. Having said that I learned an awful lot about some relatively obscure rock musicians, not that it was in any way helpful. Puzzle completed, but I'm slightly miffed that I couldn't solve one of the normal treated clues but still managed to finish. Too early to say which one it was.

posting definitely helps the grey matter - i now see the treatment for first set so will see where that gets me!

Got there (at least to a point of being able to submit if i wanted to) - certainly the song was a new one on me - although im probably not of the vintage that was mentioned earlier! certainly more challenging that some of the more recent listeners (not that i consider any of them easy).

A couple of remaining doubts though:
- Is the treatment of the first set fully consistent across all four?
- i cannot work out the answer for one of them - the third one in clue order.
