I am at the stage where I am looking for the 30 cells to highlight. Having read all the previous posts, I gather that I should be looking for two 9 letter items, read in reverse, with two 6 letter items above them. I am not sure whether the items are animal or mineral, but apparently they have 12 legs between them, which suggests that 3 of them are animal and the other is mineral. I have stared and stared at the grid without success. Am I on the right track, or barking up the wrong tree?

You could also get to 12 legs with, say, 4, 4, 2 and 2.

Late to the party after a week in hospital. I managed to solve the clues, which were tougher than an SAS regiment when you're not firing on all cylinders, but couldn't face the endgame which has caused so much consternation to the majority here. I only "completed" it after reading the helpful hints on here - special thanks to Drxx and Quisling - and although the source material is interesting, I have to question whether such wilful obscurity is really fair, especially when combined with unhelpful rubric like this. I wish we'd had Chalicea's gentle puzzle this week and this one... some time in 2112?

Not only have I been too dense to convert my (seemingly) finished grid into some kind of parseable message, I've been too dense to usefully interpret the hints here to that end. Can someone confirm whether there are meant to be 15 extraneous words in the Acrosses and 12 in the Downs?

That won't confirm my words are correct, obviously, but at least it's something.

Chrisremo - if I am right in thinking, you are not making sense of the spelled out instruction, two suggestions, look back at post 24, and try Googling the last eight letters (hopefully you have them correct.)
