First word, I can guess. But 'loan' doesn't give me anything in Chambers.

Lumen, if you went to the library to borrow a book they might say the "book is currently on loan" or the "book is currently ???"

Thanks Brendan. Second part of the wordplay is 'on loan', that works. As it is a vertical solution I was thinking the first bit went 'on' loan.

Regarding 36a ("Come back after withering remark, initially as a rebuke (6)"), the instructions say this answer is in the OED. Does this imply it is NOT in Chambers?

I have a word that conceivably matches a potential definition, but my word is in Chambers, and I don't have an OED copy or subscription. I don't think I understand the wordplay well enough to know if this word fits the grid, and as my grid is only half-full I don't have enough crosses to be certain either.

36a answer is not in Chambers though a different part of speech is listed.
Any mention of OED or other dictionary is because a word is not in Chambers. All answers other than proper nouns will normally be in Chambers.
