I only needed the hints to correct my last 2 guesses... was convinced 12A ended in DS and meant paid (so was trying to work out why "does long journey" was what is going on in Ukraine right now, and 1D I had it being a word from an acronym e.g. the F in FCA)

Havent posted on here in awhile but have still been doing the crossword everyweek (and using the forum) - usually on Zoom or in person with my Dad.

Have to agree with the comments about how much this forum helps - I actually did quite a few clues on my own as my Dad was busy today -which I never would have done a year ago! FOI was 7A - I got it within seconds of looking at it... Probably because I've got a stag in a certain country shortly 😁 So thanks to everyone for all the clues.

It would be really interesting to know how many followers of this forum there are - as opposed to those who post. I’m a regular viewer of the invaluable hints given here but usually finish too late to make a sensible contribution - so no difference this week but just had to say how brilliant the special feature of this puzzle is, and without this forum I simply wouldn’t have seen it! Managed 75% with the support of a Red Setter only but couldn’t get a start in the NW corner - stared at the anagram for 7 for ages but just couldn’t see it, but pleased to say with the numerous clues on here we finally got there ……

That's great to hear that you and your canine managed to get over the finish line. I was looking after my friend's dog a little while ago and he was forever ducking under my arm while I was typing to try and insert himself between me and the laptop - heaven forbid he should feel ignored 😂

I think, judging by the comments, many of us found the NW corner the most difficult.

Also, most of on here solve other crosswords as well, all across the weekend, so it's never too late to post your thoughts or ask for or give help.

First time poster here.

Prompted to join the forum because the well judged help from everyone today saw me across the finishing line, eventually, when the penny dropped.

1d - I think you might have the wrong. The first 3 letters are a 4 letter word for "bank" as a verb (like depend (on)) + 3 letter "false statement" - definition is a word for a "person close to you" that we don't use over here but is popular in Australia.

3d - Single letter "united" + 2 letter "home" reversed/back + 2 letter "playing" (as in 'the match is playing' - 'the match is ??') + S(pecial)
