hi cymro
10 is thematic
how have you got a second letter in 9a if you haven't got 1d? i can't tell what it is, but it should be L
7 is an anagram
4 is loose. it's a very specific soldier.

Hi Cymro,

9a - Your "I" is wrong - 3 letter "little" (as a number might be) + 4 letter "drink" as a verb all inside 2 letter "steamer" - definition is "decline"

4d - 6 letter "soldier" minus first letter/'topless' inside abbr. of "city 16 visited"

10a - a synonym of "not once" after "cycling" ie starting the word in a cell other than the first and then continuing as normal, cycing back to the first cell when you reach the last one - definition is (he) "described global tour around here"

Hi Chris,

That's very good - what was I saying about me missing subtle hints! 😕

Thanks, Brendan and Chrise, I’ll ponder your very helpful suggestions. It’s been weird today: the bottom half was a write-in but the NW undid me!

Hi. Sorry about the delay. Having trouble convincing a robot that I'm not a robot. Must happen to Davros and Putin all the time.

Cruciate ligament location will tip you to the cheesy phonetic pun I was alluding to.

Minno, It was very good and I'm sure your friend will really appreciate it - alas, it's par for the course that it went completely over my head:-(

cymro, 10 is a super important clue. Its wording reveals not only the puzzle's theme, but the "gimmick" feature as well.

I'm afraid my progress is slow, not helped by the tendency to fall asleep. What is that about? But I have got 6D, but can't see what it has to do with a cruciate ligament.

I haven't spotted the theme or got 8ac - I've no idea what this is about. I'm obviously out of practice. Although I didn't finish the crossword myself last week, I thought what I did do was easy. I'm not finding this easy. Please can I have a hint for 8ac, 13ac or a brain implant.

Is the anser to 9Ac a steamer. My new pressure cooker has just arrived so my brain is stuck on that part of the clue.

I've got my glass of wine now, so maybe I'll speed up.

Hi Roof,

Don't despair - I promise you'll really appreciate the ingenuity displayed by Picaroon once you get the theme and finish - so hold off on the brain transplant:-)

8a - 4 letter "shut" reversed/.needing turnover' + H(otel) - definition is "Mumbai Royal".

13a - 3 letter "series" goes around/entertains both 3 letter "bill's" (2 letter but there's an apostrophe S) and 2 letter "house" - definition is "travelling entertainment"

Forget cruciate ligament. It was a tangent of mine.

I've just got the connection thanks to Chrise @50. Very amusing.
