Does WordWebPro cover all the obscure words and abbreviations found in Chambers? For the Listener that's a must. I'd like to use the Chambers app for Windows, but I can't get it as I refuse to sign in to my PC with a Microsoft account.

Yes, it does. Plus Chambers thesaurus, ODE & Collins.

I have also added web links to Wikipedia, Longman, MacMillan, Urban dictionary, Wiktionary, Wordnet and others.

You can do anagrams on the major dictionaries, plus a powerful search function and searchable lists of many different word categories (but without definitions) - useful for geography, names and the like.

All at a price, of course.

Thanks. The Chambers CD suffices most of the time but I’ll bear that in mind.

Although I found this relatively straightforward I am having difficulty parsing two clues, which is very irritating. Please can I have a gentle nudge? The problem clues are:

17a: I started with an old word for "more religious" from which I removed an extra letter. I then replaced a two letter Saint with a two letter lord to get the answer. However, the two letter lord had to be reversed before entry and I can't see how the clue indicates that reversal.

8d:. I know the answer, definition and extra letter but the wordplay has me stumped.

Thank you in advance!

Kitsune, for 17a the replacement is a single letter (the second letter that makes you see a reversal is already there in the original). 8d I fear I have forgotten already!

A gentle solve this week. But I needed the last of the items I found to correct a silly mistake in the original gridfill.

Thank you Vagans!

Nice to have a straightforward one after last week. Still stuck on that in spite of going back to it several times. Any hints would be appreciated!

Diver, last week's puzzle was definitely a tougher one but it is well worth persevering with.

Look at 7A. It has only one possible answer which only fits in one place in the puzzle, and there is only one way to build a pentomino around the repeated digit in that answer. Then concentrate on the other two digits, and where their respective pentomino shapes could be situated. There aren't too many options to try.

Next, look at 3D, 4D and 5D, and you will hopefully soon be filling in those empty squares!!

Thanks, Schorley, for the tips. I will try again as I finished this week’s puzzle quickly!

Thank you, Jack and Jordan, for your help. As always the wordplay seems so obvious in retrospect!

It feels as though the last few weeks have been relatively gentle. I'm anticipating a stinker soon.
