All done, but I still can't see what the original grid entries for the 3 normal clues are supposed to represent. I assume it's a notation to comply with (a) in the preamble, but if so, it's beyond me. If anyone could put my mind at rest, it would be welcomed.

Many thanks to tatters and malone.

There is a problem again with the amps amps etc in the heading of Listener 4690. Does anyone want a fresh thread starting, say Part 2, or have you all finished with it?

peterm, I played a recorder at school an ice-age ago. That was helpful.

Norah -
Sorry, but I haven't a clue what you mean by "amps, amps" in relation to the 4690 thread - it all looks normal to me. Could you explain, please?

It would be a pity to delete the 4690 thread, if that's what you're suggesting - if nothing else, my post #2 on it giving the link to the Dropbox site for downloading the Listener at 16:00 each Friday has evidently proved helpful to at least one person this week.

Thanks planks. No such skills on my part and I couldn't track down anything particularly helpful on Google. I'll leave it at that.

Quixote, it’s a problem in the heading, amps, amps, appear in the background then Users get the message they can’t post because there’s more than 100 characters. I don’t DO technical in any shape or form so this is way beyond me.

I DO NOT INTEND TO DELETE THE LISTENER 4690 THREAD. If Users request it, I can start a second thread called Part 2 and the discussion can carry on there.

Just a way round a problem.

Like a few other solvers I have a full grid without a clue for any of the normal solutions. Pretty confident that my extra letters are all up to snuff. Is there a connection between 18 12 and the final word given by the extra letters?

A reply to planks post 78 and a further plea for help.
I have a near answer to 22, 31 which begins with the two-word title of a horror film and includes a five-letter synonym for death. HOWEVER...
I make it 26 letters not 24. Can anyone tell me where I am going wrong?

The grand-pups have now arrived on the sandbank with a recorder (very difficult to play if you have flippers) so we'll all have a bash at 11, 17. I'm still uncertain about the endgame but I'll have another look at all the posts on the thread and hopefully pick up some hints.

Williamseal, perhaps you're using the definite article rather than the indefinite for 22/31?

My solution for 22,31 begins with a two letter title for a horror film williamseal.
