Williamseal. I tried a similar approach but found that I could only get a sense of things after solving the clues. The first one is, I think, the likeliest to yield if you 'stretch' the first and hesitate a bit after four.

SS, why not! Celebrating victory is much nicer than wallowing in defeat. Happy (belated) xmas to all (especially Tatters, Norah and Malone for all their appreciated hard work) and hopefully a much happier new year to all. Haven't read the rest of the thread yet as still trying to solve unaided. Just popped in for a moan. Have 3/4 of the grid, and the three normal answers. Think I know the method for entry for the three normal answers. However, much like the other puzzle that used this device earlier in the year, there seem to be literally tens of different options for each of these. So far only one has an option that matches what I have in the grid. For the other two I have painfully decoded about 15 examples each from the internet, none of which match my letters. This form of entry should be banned in my view.

Plus I have the name and it is associated with a genre I detest heartily.

Smellyharry, that genre, which I also detest with a vengeance, is not relevant. Also, what you think the device for completing this is incorrect. Earlier posts should steer you in the right direction. Look out for all those red herrings.
