... but there doesn't seem to be any obvious reason for the order of the lakes?

All I can think is that the ones listed all appear in the dictionary, but it’s a bit weak

ChrisE - there doesn't need to be an order with the sequence, there is only one Great Lake left.

It’s a shame they are not in order of increasing size, could have been a super solution ;-)

Returning to this in the post-christmas lull, does anyone have any great further thoughts on the clue "For better- but not necessarily for worse. 4 4"?
