Thank you Will. Which means that I need to look elsewhere for my last extra letter. Ah, I see it now !

Malone, If it’s what I get paid - a pittance is the answer. But he’s a good boy to his old Mum so I’m not complaining,🥰

Yes, I agree, we need to keep ALL thematic stuff in the EXTRA HELP Thread.

Notwithstanding my recent little offering at #48 on this thread, all the recent palaver has made me very diffident about posting anything Listener related.

Norah -
it doesn't puzzle me at all; rather as expected, in fact: we're all walking on eggshells.

- but probably no bad thing - back to ascetic purity after the descent into quarrelsome decadence - will we be seeing the same thing in the T-party shortly, I wonder?

Just to chip in on the discussion, my main gripe used to be that, when coming to the forum to ask for a nudge on a particular clue, I'd 'fast forward' through the existing postings, looking to see if someone had already posted on that clue. It was easy to look out for something like '24A' whilst not seeing what was written in all the other posts. The problem was that a couple of posters used to put unsolicited answers, or the theme itself, in BLOCK CAPITALS SO IT WAS IMPOSSIBLE TO AVOID THEM as I scrolled through. Apart from my own slight transgression last week, I've not noticed this happening for quite some time and people have usually been very circumspect in giving help without revealing too much information.

I am a little apprehensive about commenting after being comprehensivly reprimanded a couple of months ago for overstepping a line I had not realised was there.
But - the two (or three) threads will always lead to issues with perfectly reasonable posts being panned because they have been posted in the wrong thread.
Why not just have just one thread with this simple advice. “Please feel free give hints in response to posted questions but do not reveal complete answers and never disclose the theme.”
If people have given up and want complete answers and thematic disclosure they can at least wait until the the results are published.
(Stands well back…..)

I agree with you, Smithax. We got along reasonably well with one thread for quite a while until there was trouble with someone giving out too much information about the endgame and we hoped that splitting into 2 - (then 3!) - threads would somehow fix the problem. Now there's controversy not only on whether too many beans have been spilled but whether one has picked the correct thread for an otherwise kosher post.

Back to the current puzzle; how about a hint as to how 4d works...thx

Hi Buzzb,

I'm really wary of posting on the Listener anymore but I think I'll be okay with this one:-)

4d - Single letter "a duck" + 4 letter "fellow" around single letter "number" - with definition "1 or 2 on scorecard".
