I've finished this, but can't work out the parsing for:
6a) Back of put + a convenience backwards?
21a) I've got a word for fit that works, but no idea on parsing.

Hi Mikey,

6a - If you reverse/put back the answer you get a slang word meaning "the necessary" (as in 'hand over the necessary - I know, it's not the most obvious meaning)

21a - 5 letter "agent" as in a 'stand in' around/'welcoming' A (from the clue) then 2 letter "swim on vacation" - definition is "fit" (of acute pain)

Pretty sure I've solved 17d and 24a. Can anyone parse these please?

17d is a single letter chemical symbol inside a full word for another element
24a is a slang word for 6a and a cryptic interpretation of where one’s hand might be

Hi Fazed,

17d - 6 letter "metal" around single letter "gas" - definition a slang word for a 6a.

24a - Is a double definition. The first is something that requires a hand in it to work and the second is a different meaning to 6a, where one person is controlled by another - much like the first definition:-)

Thank you Jono.
Can't believe I couldn't see 17d myself but 24 is a new one to me.

For 24a, I think I was wrong to say ‘slang’ btw, Chambers has them as synonyms

Late to this (I've been cooking curries all morning!) I wasn't familiar with the other meaning of 6a reversed.
I can't make any sense of the Spoonerism, assuming I have the right 6a!

Hi Chris,

The Spoonerism - if you add the first 2 letters of the answer to the last 2 you get a homophone of "task" and if you add the letter they replace to the beginning you get a homophone of a synonym for "all there" as in 'normal'.
