As so ofteh happens the light dawned soon after I posted!

I think I have the answer to 5ac but am puzzled about the wordplay as the word I have (and in Chambers) is not an anagram of the word in the clue. A hint would be welcome, please.

There are two letters ignored in the wordplay, which is IN A + (common abbreviation for thoroughfare)

5ac is surely "are", ie A from sillabub + U for "toffy" with nuts as the anagrind

I parsed it the same as you Ixion, with the A(re) removed and U (toffy/upper class) added.

You're right Ixion - wrong crossword (late night senior moment)!

jamesa - the thematic 9-cell items are all words (except a 2-word phrase)

Somewhat underwhelming, I don't really buy the shape argument, partly because that would require the H to have concave diagonals, which it never does as far as I'm aware, but maybe that is the intention.

One loose end from me, 31a. Have a scots word meaning wept, can't see the wordplay.
