I have full grid apart from 12a, only one word fits I think but I’m not seeing why.
And can’t see theme or endgame! Focussing on the tip to look for five synonyms…really?…..in across solutions presumably.

Lumen, I'm not sure if the five synonyms hint would have helped me. Everyone looks at these in their own manner, but what helped me was that every thematic item is 9 letters. How can you get 9 letters involving one blank every time?

mullingar - there is an obscure -6-letter word for 'globe fishes' - whatever they are! - ending in ON.
