For the end game are the 5 thematic items similar to 28 down ?
Does each barred off square contain 1 or more letters replaced by a
symbol and 8 other normal cells preceding/succeeding the symbol cell ?

Hi krauton. Just finished endgame and came here for an explanation. Re your questions, if I'm correct, the 5 thematic items aren't the same as 28d. Each barred off square contains a single letter, no symbols.

My question is I understand the title but don't see how it influences the 'placement' of each item.
