Thanks: ap is a new one for me, and I must remember that words can be verbs as well as nouns!

And sorry, I now remember I’d figured out the first part of 14d. But I still don’t understand the second part. I mean, such a house could be kind of spooky, I guess, but I don’t quite see a strong enough click for a crossword clue.

Not such a house, but a specific one, in a 1953 horror film.

The works are wax-coated corpses stolen from the morgue.

Preserved in the US National Film Registry as culturally significant, apparently.

Thanks hw7: I feel that’s a pretty loose way to clue a specific word, but I’ll stop trying to overthink it — and I enjoyed the rest of the grid so I’ll excuse a clue or two I find slightly less satisfactory :-)
