Thanks hw7 - that is all too common a problem for me, but all sorted out now. There were (are) some very devious misprints in these clues and the obvious gigantic red herring as well. I am still slightly mystified by the parsing in 3d and 20d, but not too worried about that. After last weeks 4 day slog I think I will enjoy this weekend a little more than last weeks.

I can only highlight 17 relevant cells if “contiguous” includes touching at a corner. Am I wrong ?

You are correct. All instances of any of the letters of the name in the grid must be highlighted - and they are contiguous.

Smithsax, all Moffat asked was “is this correct?” It needed a one-word answer. Why the additional information giving away the highlighting that no one has requested? It simply spoils it for others

Apologies if I have given too much away. It is the answers thread. I did not reveal the name. I don’t think anyone without the name would be able to work back to find it from what I said how ever long they stared at the grid.

Why did you reveal the same info on the other thread?

I managed to fill the grid and carry out instructions comfortably, but I am still unable to parse 15a, 38a and 3d (though I think my answers are correct). Any hints appreciated.
