mathprofrockstar - yes, it is wienie and the def for 20 is a disease of the gums (the NZ birds begin with the letter 't' which is extra - around a 3 letter word for 'settled').

numbskull - no, some letters are in their correct places - and in group 5 most of them are.

Thanks, drxx. I had thought it was gums as in trees. I still don't see the wordplay for 31 though, and I've bounced back and forth between "weenie" and "wienie" as the entry.

It comes from a slang word meaning newcomer (sometimes there's a 'b' in it) and the 1st letter (n) delayed [the extra letter is the other 'e'].

Thanks, drxx. I had just found it. Never heard that particular version without the b.

My Chambers app is really getting a workout today. One more question. I now have the last group of six in the across clues, but I think my guess for the wordplay in 29 was wrong. I had s-t-e + ams, which I am confident of, but I thought "i" was removed as in spots = aims. Now I think it must be "p" removed, to make a word of the extra letters, which means spots = pams. I have run across this definition of "pam" in the Listener before, so I think I have it now. Could anyone confirm? (By the way, the word "pam" makes me uncomfortable having had a difficult girlfriend of that name a long time ago.)

Your "p" is dodgy. Try another - it is *ams that you need
