Clever and innovative construction but I'm struggling with the other thematic order. Does it start with the replaced letter and is it the same length as the others?

I am now even more confused by 31. Is "weenie" not correct?

However I’m puzzled by the last bit of the preamble. I’ve added the letter to a cell to give the last group- useful people with a bow- but that means the down answer is no longer a real word. That contradicts preamble- am I wrong?

Novice, are you sure you've entered the letter in the correct part of the Across word?

Re 20, is the three-letter "word" actually an abbrev. or am I barking up the wrong tree so to speak?
