I seem to be having the opposite problem with the app. This week I got the beloved check, but last week I did not. I feel fairly confident that I have them all correct, but still no check. Certainly, every square is filled, so that is different than what some of you report. Mine is the Guardian Puzzles app on Apple devices.

I thought this was quite hard - too much Sunday lunch perhaps. And lots of good clues too. Pleased to find another paper solver in Catcharmer. FOI 2d, COD 6d. LOI 16a -I was just about to come to the Forum for help when I had my PDM.

By the way, if you like a romcom, I can recommend 10a.

Re the app green tick discussion: the android phone app I use gives a green tick whatever you put in, so long as you fill the grid! I’d guess that an up to date version of the guardian puzzles app works correctly though.

Just can’t parse 8d - Pugs playthings? (4). The answer must be ‘toys’ but just can’t figure out what it has to do with pugs!

For the judging at Crufts the 7 dog groups are
TOY, Gundog, Utility, Hounds, Working, Pastoral and Terriers.
