I think 17a could have been clued with "returning" rather than "rising", thus keeping the furious 225ers at bay

Bit late to this today. While the clueing in Everyman has certainly become cleaner recently I feel it’s perhaps lost some of the quirkiness and humour we had come to expect over the years. Perhaps that’s just me, but I had a similar sense last week. I had exactly the same reaction to 17a.

Sleep took over last night with a few to finish. All done now. On rereading I'm not convinced on my ans for 18. Some help with the parsing would be appreciated. Also, Brendan I can't see any Japanese references anywhere.

Morning, I've never heard of 2d, and managed to pencil in 3a and 23a incorrectly, but quickly resolved.

I can't parse 6d or 19a. However feeling a bit 22d as I've not had a shower as my hot water isn't working this morning :(

Hi Warden,

6d - "to intone a critical review" is split 4,1,3 around a 3 letter "mineral deposit"

19a - first the letters are "summer in France" (in French) followed by an anagram of "snarl" minus single letter S(un)

Hi Fop,

18d - the first three letters are a type of Japanese theatre.

Thanks Fop, it's a word I've only ever seen in crosswords the Times and the barred puzzles like the EV and IQ.

Could this be a sign the Everyman is becoming more difficult ....

No. I'm sure I've seen it before, sometimes with just the first 2 letters and sometimes I think described as Japanese opera.

Hi Paul,

You're absolutely right. Using Geeker's new found technique of previous clue searching, I typed "??? site:fifteensquared.net" in Google and, in addition to several appearance in the Financial Times and Independent on Sunday, there is also this from Everyman 3,600 ...

"Despite reputation, getting behind idiot in drama" (15)

.... but it uses the 2 letter spelling.
