Ok. Got it now. What’s the app called pls?

The app we're referring to is not the Guardian newspaper website , where all the crosswords are available, but is a specific Guardian puzzle app that you can get on Google Play and presumably on the Apple store.

In addition to the Prize, Everyman an Quiptic crosswords, it also has Codeword and Sudoku puzzles and is updated daily.

When you correctly complete a crossword you get a green circle with a tick inside:-)

App is called "The Guardian Puzzles".

ok, got 22D now but it wasn't listed in the thesaurus site I use for "peeved" or "disgruntled" only for "angry".

Hi everyone, I struggled to get started with this at first, but found it straightforward once I got going. I enjoyed it, not sure it’s that much easier than recent weeks, but as usual, less challenging than the Saturday prize. Maybe a few too many anagrams, but some nice clues with smooth surfaces, e.g. 11a and 15a. Some good discussion here today, agree that “rising” in 17a is a bit off.

FOI 5d, LOI 22d, COD 15a over 11a.

I wonder if we're talking about the same app? Or, if we are, I think you might have a faulty version. I've just completed the current Quick Crossword dated 19th July but spelt the penultimate letter of 2d AMMONIA with several incorrect letters, ie AMMONXA and AMMONTA etc. and each time a box appears saying "You're Close" - but no tick. It was only when I spelt it correctly that green tick appeared.

It appears that the different apps behave differently. I hadn't appreciated the complexities involved. I use the Guardian Newspaper Android app (which includes the crosswords for subscribers but not others).

With that app, if I for example change 22d to "mope", I still get a green cross. From what you say, the puzzles app is more generous with its feedback (which arguably it shouldn't be given that there are prizes at stake, at least in principle).

Thanks Brendan. I use the Guardian app. I am also looking forward to learning what an app is. I remember when they were programmes on mainframes. Ho ho. Just got a green tick because I am not a robot (as far as I know).
