"On vacation" as in "after being vacated/emptied" so you delete the middle letters of HOTELS

Still struggling, although I quickly got the missing letter theme.

Help please with 23ac - the previous hint wasn’t enough for me- and 33ac. I don’t have OED, so can’t check my guesses!

Thanks

Think I’m there after a bit of a slog, but can’t figure out how 2d works. I’m assuming it’s a 3-letter abbreviation + L for “end of April”, but I can’t see the full answer / removed letter. Any enlightenment would be appreciated.

Dylan, 23a .. the key is a 3-letter word for “the keeper of a door-lock” .. a word more commonly used for e.g. “to arrest”

lord badger- I didnt know this word either and had to resort to the search function in chambers app to find words ending in the entry. it's a short omission with whole being an obsolete word for bridle.

BTW can someone explain the omission in 28d pls.

Dylan, although I dont have OED, I thought "that must be it" because it just looks like the definition.

Shout if you need more eg type of clue?

I knew on vacation meant to delete the middle letters, but always wondered why - thanks for the explain!

Thanks andyp .. re 28d, the omitted letter is a long one (!) .. I thought it was “E” at first (prior to PDM) but then read further on in Chambers ..
