There's no misprinted N in the acrosses, Gitto. Otherwise you're correct.

I meant no extra N, of course!

I got held up for a while with 18a thinking the D at the end of "kind" was extra - took way longer than it should for me to see my error:-(

It's cleverer than I thought. Look up the relationship word, together with the two key words in the extra letters. Turns out the pairs belong to the equivalent sets.

I have the actors and the mythological characters, but I can't for the life of me spot the literary names. Are they well-known? Given the cells I've highlighted so far I think I'm looking for a total of ten letters, unless they cross other names as well. Could someone give me a nudge as to the general area?

For 18, I'm with Loge and Brendan. It works perfectly well as either type of clue.

I assume 32D begins with P rather than B. I guess the title might refer to a family tree. I’m now searching for 3 more pairs after the mythological one leapt out. I’m assuming two more pairs have a similar layout and the fourth is different but still vertical or horizontal rather than oblique?

Hi Rickeye,

3 are the same (inc. the mythical ones) and the fourth is horizontal.
