Sorry about my faux pas in 77, everybody. I used that word because I was then expecting the 6-letter word to refer to a gun (reasonable, after all), and I didn't want to give the game away. A very red red herring it was too.

Thanks, son1ofrover1, but I have the entries. I just can’t see how they are parsed.

Hi MPRS,

28d - 2 letters "remains unchanged" inside 2 letter "towards" + single letter "zero" + single letter "new".

33d - 2 letter "each" outside three letter "managed" all reversed (l)"over"

Didn’t catch that the “l” was extra thus giving “over.”

Having just checked the solution to Listener 4656 and discovered I had ONE incorrect letter in a light where I had a question mark against the clue (D'OH!), I really need to seek assistance parsing 12ac, 39ac and 35dn.
I have replaced the two adjacent entries and highlighted five of the six related items, so it seems a fair bet that I have the solution to one (or maybe two!) of the above clues not quite correct.
Any help would be gratefully received.

(Hats off to Wan for a cleverly-constructed puzzle in which, for once in a long while, some of the clues were much trickier than the endgame — at least for this solver. I assume the puzzle's title refers to words one to four derived from the extra letters from clues.)

I agree that the clues were very tricky. I'm still working at it, so the only one I have is 12, and that took me a long time to parse. I believe it is well = sae (in Edinburgh) around "l" for the end of peril and in, an old version of inn or house.

Thanks, MPRS.

I've just now seen Brendan's partial parsing of 12ac (post 60) which gave me the route to sorting the rest myself.

I also found Unclued's parsing of 39ac (post 31). I had the solution wrong, so the sixth associated item has now become clear and symmetry is maintained!

Only 35dn's parsing is a mystery now; all letters are checked, so I must have the correct solution but I can't fathom how the clue leads to it. (A cryptic nudge should be enough!)

You will have to enlighten me on 35. Figured out 39 and the other crossers so I know the definition is base. Still don’t see the parsing.
