Taking hints from this thread (the end game often bamboozles me!) I have the author and the works.

Having minced up the 6 plain clue first letters I have a "thematic hint" word. Does a seven letter synonym of this word replace one of the adjacent entries?

If so, do the entries also completely overlap?

I’m almost there but struggling to find the fourth item in the string. Any hints much appreciated.

If you google the author and the synonym you have deduced you will find the second word which defines the "contrivance". If you go back through this thread you will find where to place the words defining the "contrivance". The "six associated items" start their "string" at the end of the "contrivance".

It's from Poland - I'd never heard of it.

That post was meant for Ixion. Numbskull, the fourth item starts at the end of the third and mostly runs backwards before going down to join up with the fifth.

I may have miscounted. I had that one. It’s the third one l’m missing. I have a 4 letter possibility for it but not sure.
