I've got stuck with the SW corner and would appreciate a tip for 18d. I have several crossers and there are very few options!

Granama, I think the idea is that the highlighted string of six items appears as if produced by the item which results from the changed words, which was the way the author described his/her method of producing his/her works. No doubt someone can improve on both the quality and accuracy of this explanation!

If there's another way to identify the author, I haven't spotted it.

Thanks Loge. I have the string of things appearing from the device the author claimed to be + the 6 works. It's really that there doesn't appear to be any suggestion that you have to infer the author from the workd. Ah well, on to the Inquisitor!

Loge, I agree with that, and also with Granama1’s point that taken literally, the message is misleading. It makes best sense if you parenthesise words 3 to 7 of the message, and realise it is simply indicating what the highlighting “represents”. If you search for the creator’s name, I fear you will search in vain ...

The left side is proving much more difficult for me than the right. I do have a couple of entries where I can't see the parsing though. Can anyone give a very gentle hint for 28 or 33?

I'm coming very late to this week's, having been otherwise tied up until this afternoon. I have a filled grid, and have identified the author. If the anagram of the 6 letters is also a common sausage then that's as far as I've got. The leap from there to identifying and changing 2 words seems a leap too far right now. Googling the reasonably obvious words (including the author) provides nothing helpful, nor any sign of a "contrivance". What am I missing?

cockie - you’re looking for a quote from the author that includes the “contrivance” and that other thing you have found may well be relevant.

I can't see where to put my two word phrase....adjacent? A straight swap, delete two real entries (of the same length), replace with the two word phrase, leaving all real words?!

Omen, you have to delete two seven letter words and replace them with the contrivance.
