Think 8d is a valid PP of the verb, just not a very attractive one.

I don't think I've ever coldsolved an entire crossword before! I couldn't have finished without Quisling and Unclued's help. Thanks, guys. While I'm glad others enjoyed it, I found this such a long tedious slog for very little reward.

32a has me stumped. Even reverse engineering fails to give me anything sensible. A steer would be gratefully received.

Hi Peejayemm,

32a - Is an 8 letter "official summons" minus a 4 letter "French director" (occurs often in cryptics) - definition is an American spelling of a "branch"

This is, of course, pre-encipher.

All very good.

One way to make things easier is to realise you don’t have to cold solve every clue before encryption and grid entry; once you know enough of the mapping to work out which letters map to one and which to two, you can enter them into a sacrificial unencrypted grid, as either single letters, or C1 and C2.

With crosses, you’ll find that H1=F2=I etc, making completing this grid much easier, with the whole thing being back-finished by looking at viable possibilities generated for the encrypted one.
