The solution is half of "salability" back to front. I had to check the solution - unknown to me - in Chambers but the wordplay is more straightforward that one might expect.

Thanks very much candledave, I've got it now.

I'd photocopied the grid to work on and in doing so I'd missed the dark bar at the start of the word. Makes much more sense now!
