Oh dear Chris, I'm afraid I hadn't heard of JT either - the shame! 🥵

Hi all! First post but been doing the crossword for a while and have enjoyed the help from this forum but not been brave enough to post! Picaroon has sent me over the edge.... think am stupidly stuck on 16d. I have E-H-A-S- but nothing fits that! Also can’t for the life of me work out 3D, clearly a block for me as many on here said was their FOI I think, so a clue for that would be grand! Thanks!

Welcome noeyedeer (like the moniker!)
16d your letters are right. It's a word that I had never heard, but it makes sense. The definition is "put in black vehicle".
I didn't like 3d (though I don't like his music either). "Rapidly" is superfluous. The wordplay is "second, variable, skill"

noeyedeer: 16d - defn. "put in black vehicle"; 5-letter syn. for "tries" inside alternating letters from another word in the clue.

Hi Noeyedeer,

Welcome to the Forum.

16d - 5 letter "tries" as in a court case inside/"to cut" the odd letters/"periodically" of "peonies" - definition is a rather dark humour take on "put in black vehicle". Your letters are correct.

3d - 2 letters for "second" (as in a very short period of time) + single letter "variable" (as in maths) + 3 letter "skill" - definition is a very, very, famous "scorer",

Thanks Chrise, Geeker and Brendan for the welcomes and the help. 3D resulted in a real groan - 16d I didn’t know, had guessed at but thought it wasn’t a word. Thanks v much for the parsing tips!
