Thanks, just seen your response to my earlier post. 8a & 24a indeed two of the greats. Lucky enough to have seen both, 24a at Craven Cottage in the '70's and 8 at Foxboro, US in '94 literally days before he was found to be a 19. Never quite able to forgive his trickery of '86.

His "manual scoring" absolutely shattered me at the time but I can't really blame him. If an English "scorer" had done it at the other end would we all be wringing our hands in disgust? I don't think so, In truth, is it really any different to a player going down too easily in the box to win a penalty?

Still none the wiser on the anagram(s) but thank you Brendan for the pointers.

You're absolutely right! Slowly coming to terms, another 35 years and I'm sure I'll be over it.

Phew. That was hard. But enjoyable and impressive use of all the possibilities of ‘score’. FOI: 15a (a favourite ‘scorer’), LOI: 26a. COD: several to choose from but I am going with 6d, which I found very pleasing.

i confess that i recognised what 8a was referring to quite some time before i was able to remember the name...

Hi Chris, just to clarify, I was referring to 15a.

Finished. Had to return after a break a few times to let the subconscious do the work and found some of this really tricky. Think 11 COD for me and like many it seems was held up by having the wrong answer in 2d for a while. I have a total blank on parsing of 5d. Assuming I have the right answer which I'm not sure I do.
